Background

According to the 1991 census, there are around 1,600 African-Caribbean's who either settled or are students in Northern Ireland. These countries include Kenya (179), Malawi (52), Tabzania (51), Uganda (48), Zambia (235), Botswana (6), Zimbabwe (153), Gambia (21), Ghana (37), Nigeria (106), Sierra Leone (13), Barbados (13), Belize (16), Guyana (25), Jamaica (60), Trinidad & Tobago (23), West Indies (19), South Africa (618 – this includes a high proportion of white South Africans).

There is no such concept as a single Afro-Caribbean community, but some cultural and traditional patterns are likely to be common among those with roots in the Caribbean Islands.

It seems to be that the African-Caribbean's group in Northern Ireland have a high proportion of mixed marriages with local people. The Northern Ireland African Cultural Centre was set up in 1995 to provide services and support to the African-Caribbean community.
