Festivals and Customs

Once a year Koreans from all over Northern Ireland will meet to celebrate traditional festivals.

Koreans observe their holidays in a variety of ways. They officially follow the Gregorian calendar, though some holidays are on the lunar calendar.

Movement Day
This day marks the day when a large-scale independence movement was waged against Japanese colonial rule in 1919

Arbor Day
A day when trees are planted throughout the country

Children's Day
A day of various celebrations for children
 
Buddha's Birthday
The eighth day of the fourth month by the lunar calendar. Solemn rituals are held at Buddhist temples. The day's festivities are climaxed by a lantern parade in downtown Seoul
6 June
Memorial Day
The nation pays tribute to its war dead. Memorial services are held at the National Cemetery
17 January
Constitution Day
This day commemorates the promulgation of the Republic of Korea's Constitution in 1948
15 August
Liberation Day
On this day in 1945, Korea was liberated from Japan's 35-year-long colonial rule. This day also marks the establishment of the government of the Republic of Korea in 1948
 
Ch'usuk
The 15 th day of the eighth month by the lunar calendar. This is one of the biggest national holidays of the year. Families hold memorial services at home or at family graves. Viewing the full moon and making a wish is an important feature of the evening
3 December
National Foundation Day
This day marks the founding of the first nation of Korea by Tan-gun in 2333 B.C.
25 December
Christmas Day
Both Christians and non-Christians alike celebrate this day, as in the West

 

Other Special Days
 
May 1: Labour Day
Although Labour Day is not a government holiday, banks and business establishments are closed, and many people enjoy a day off.
 
May 8: Parent's Day
Sons and daughters show their love and respect for both their parents on this day.
 
May-June: Tano Day
Tano is one of the three great celebration days of the lunar calendar (the 5 th day of the lunar month), together with SI and Ch'usk. It is also known as “swing day” since girls dressed in their prettiest clothes often enter swinging competitions.
 
October 1: Armed Forces Day
Honour guard ceremonies are held at Sngnam Airport or at a Military Headquarters in Yongsan in alternate years.
 
October 9: Han-g I Day 
This day celebrates the anniversary of the introduction of Han-g I, the written language of Korea. Han-g I was invented at the decree of King Sejong in the mid-15 th century.
